The American POW-MIA Flag was designed in the 1970s as a symbol by the National League of Families for citizen concern for U.S. Military Personnel taken as Prisoners of War (POW) or Missing in Action (MIA).
National POW-MIA Recognition Day honors those who were Prisoners of War and those who are still Missing in Action. The first POW-MIA Recognition Day was in 1979. As of 1986, this day is observed annually on the Third Friday of September
